The Way of the Cross is the heart of our discipleship and the ministry of reconciliation is the purpose of the church. Each step is a dangerous one but vital to our transformation and testimony.
But God has not left us without resources. In fact, to follow the Way of the Cross is not only to live dangerously but also gloriously. After all, it can’t be done except in the power of the Spirit and with the direct intervention and help of God.
And he will.
Romans 8 gives us Seven Truths for Glorious Living that can, literally, transform our drudgery into joy and our sadness into rejoicing. Everything matters and the goal is to enjoy him forever.
Not only in the life to come but here and now.
That is also an integral part of the Way of the Cross. Jesus wept and struggled and resisted that cup of wrath as well he should if his love for his Father was pure.
But still, he obeys.
And not just obeys, but obeys willingly, joyously (even if it isn’t so obvious to the naked eye). For the joy set before him, Jesus endured the cross, says the Book of Hebrews. He anticipated the pleasure of God, the joy of God, and it fed his soul with strength and resilience. The joy of the Lord God was his strength.
And the same must be said of us. Otherwise, our testimony loses its flavor and is neither a sweet aroma nor an enticing calling for anyone.
After all, the Way of the Cross is meant to lead us into resurrection power and a truly transformed way of living. And who wouldn’t want that? Jesus anticipated the resurrection and the ministry and authority he would receive from his Father. We must do the same.
That is where the anointing can happen and that, my friend, means that anything and everything is possible.
